I have asked about this with those who were about. The Hoops was at East End, on the left going towards Manuden. The house is still there but now called "White Pastures"? At least I think that is the name and that it was renamed after the field behind it. On the opposite side of the road was a well which was the water supply. Also a Barn type building which was a church ( C of E ), complete with bell, used once a year until about 1952. An open air service was also held annualy on what was a small green opposite the Hoops. Further up the Road was another pub called the Black Horse but that had closed before 1932.
One wonders how such pubs survived but in the case of the Hoops it was also a smallholding of some 50 acres (not that small in those days).
Before 1932 the Hoops was in the hands of the Cox family who then sold out and took over the Brewery Tap. It was taken over by the Plum family who ran it until it closed in 1959 and became a private house. The Plums moved to Brent Pelham where one still lives.
During the early part of the 20th century there were at least 6 pubs in Furneux Pelham. Apart from THe Hoops. the Black Horse and the Brewey Tap (still going strong) there were the Star (quite recently closed), The Yew Tree at the entrance to Whitebarns Lane, and the Barley Mow in Barleycroft End. At some time Rotten Row House was also a pub which accounts for the number of public footpaths etc. heading in that direction. There was a further one at Bozen Green but thats over the border into Braughing.

Ican remember The Hoops it was at East END opposite Coes chickhen farm. it had a Inglennok fire place which iused to sit in when i was a small child .ican recall it being ran by a MrMrs plum and closing in the early sixtys

Mr grandfather Frederick Woollard was born in Barleycroft End in 1908 son of Frederick and Emma Elizabeth Brown. Emma's father Alexander was the licensed beer seller at the Hoops Beer House on the 1901 census. Does anyone have any information on the hoops beer house. I presume it is now a private dwelling as I can find no mention of it anywhere. Are there any Woollards or Browns reading this still in the area. I have visited the area on many occasions as distand realtives were in the villages of Fx Pelham, Albury, Braughing, Hay Street and Patmore Heath. Any info gratefully received.

Sorry cannot help other than to say that I have heard of other pubs in Furneux Pelham but not The Hoops. As an afterthought there is The Hoops pub in Perry Green, Much Hadham but this is not what you are probably looking for.

I am fairly certain that The Hoops was at East End, Furneux Pelham but it was before my time.
