Aircrash at Brent Pelham 3 Years, 8 Months ago
Hello to all on this website from a newbie. I am a local historian and author interested in Celtic, Roman and mediaeval coins and artefacts, as well as World War Two aviation in Hertfordshire. I have just been given two photographs taken at Brent Pelham on 23rd January 1944 showing an American P-38J aircraft that has crashed It was coded-10-LO 42-67777 and came from the 55 FG, 38FS at Nuthampstead. Whilst on a training flight at 14.24 hrs 2/Lt Henry J Tiedemann Jr experienced a fire in the Left engine - smoke then entered cockpit. He attempted to bale out, but was too low - killed. Buried at Madingley cemetery near Cambridge. I would love to hear from anyone who remembers this incident and could pinpoint the location of the crash. Admittedly it may be a mile or so from Brent Pelham as the Americans may simply have listed the incident using the nearest location. I can be located on This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it and cam send or email copies of the photographs no problem. If anyone is interested in Hertfordshires aviation history from 1909-1945 they may like to know I have written a book on the subject titles War Torn Skies Hertfordshire
I look forward to hearing from anybody
Kind regards Julian Evan-Hart
